An aroma with character and a long tradition

Myrrh is one of the best-known natural aromatic resins. Its aroma is rich, deep and layered, combining balsamic, resinous, earthy and gently smoky notes that gradually develop as the resin is heated.

For traditional incense burning, use hot incense charcoal. Myrrh is a concentrated aromatic material, so we recommend starting with only a few small pieces and adding more gradually according to the desired intensity.

What does myrrh smell like?

When heated, myrrh develops a warm, dry and balsamic aroma with resinous depth and an earthy character. The intensity can be adjusted by changing the amount of resin or the layer of sand between the hot charcoal and the myrrh.

How to burn myrrh on charcoal – step by step

Prepare a non-flammable heat-resistant bowl, dry sand or salt, self-lighting incense charcoal, metal tongs and ideally an incense spoon.

Prepare a heat-resistant bowl

Use a stable container suitable for high temperatures. Add a layer of dry sand or suitable salt to the bottom to help reduce direct heat transfer to the bowl and the surface underneath.

Light the self-lighting charcoal

Hold the charcoal with metal tongs and ignite it. Allow the self-lighting reaction to run its course and let the charcoal heat thoroughly. It may crackle or spark while lighting, so always hold it over a non-flammable surface.

Place the charcoal in the prepared bowl

Place the hot charcoal on the prepared insulating layer. Wait until it is evenly glowing and a light grey layer of ash begins to form on the surface.

Add a thin layer of sand

You can add a thin layer of dry sand on top of the hot charcoal. This creates a heat buffer between the very hot charcoal and the resin and can help prevent the myrrh from burning too quickly.

Add a few pieces of myrrh

Using an incense spoon, place only a small amount of myrrh onto the prepared charcoal. The resin will begin to heat and gradually release its characteristic aroma and smoke.

Control the intensity

If the aroma or smoke becomes too intense, you can use metal tongs to carefully turn the charcoal over, use an incense spoon to remove the remaining resin, or cover the myrrh with a little dry sand. To reduce the heat more quickly, cover the charcoal with a smaller heat-resistant non-flammable bowl or metal container. Take care when handling it – the charcoal and all tools used may be extremely hot.

💡 Sauna Masters tip: With myrrh, less is often more. Start with a few small pieces and build the aroma gradually. Too much resin on very hot charcoal can produce excessive smoke and overpower the more subtle aromatic notes.

For a better incense-burning experience

  • Always start with a very small amount of myrrh.
  • A thin layer of sand can be placed between the charcoal and the resin.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation in enclosed spaces.
  • Add more resin gradually only when the aroma begins to fade.

⚠️ Safe incense burning

  • Hot charcoal and the incense bowl can reach extremely high temperatures – do not touch them during use.
  • Use only a stable, non-flammable, heat-resistant container placed on a safe, non-flammable surface.
  • Light and move the charcoal using suitable metal tongs, never with bare hands.
  • Keep well away from paper, textiles, wood and other flammable materials.
  • Never leave hot charcoal unattended.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation while burning incense and do not directly inhale the smoke.
  • After use, allow the charcoal, ash and container to cool completely. Do not dispose of the charcoal until it is fully extinguished and cold.
